The Earth Kingdom is the largest nation of the four nations of Avatarverse. Spanning most of its continent as well as several subsidiary islands and outposts across the world, it is the largest sovereign state in the world and encompasses much of the eastern hemisphere. The kingdom operates under the rule of an Earth Monarch, currently held by the 82nd Earth Monarch Huang Ling.

Since the Hundred Year War, the Earth Kingdom has been ruled by over eighty-two monarchs from several major dynasties, most notably the House of Beifong, House of Gladius, House of Gui, House of Izaki, and presently House of Ling. Among the kingdom's most controversal rulers was Angelina Velkhana, whose reign became heavily condemned throughout the kingdom after she was exposed as a day bloodbender. Following her downfall and subsequent execution, she is remembered as the "Bloodwitch", a title associated with her reputation.

The Earth Kingdom is widely known for its traditional way of life, strong bureaucracy and spirituality, noble customs and immense territorial size. For much of history, it was regarded as the most powerful and influential nation in the world, as it possessed the largest military, economy, and landmass of any known state.

History

Starting with the Harmony Restoration Movement (c. 100–101 AG), following the Hundred Year War, the Earth Kingdom began a campaign to restore its authority over occupied territories and remove the remaining Fire Nation colonies from its lands. However, the campaign caused disputes in the colonial cities, where Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom families had lived alongside one another for generations and had begun to form families of their own; gradually becoming a failed campaign.

Between 110 and 118 AG, the former colonial territories united under a separate administration, eventually leading to the formation of the United Republic of Nations.

The Earth Kingdom has been involved in several battles and conflicts throughout its history, including a number of succession crises such as the Destran Succession War, Tenshio Succession Crisis, and Year of the Four Monarchs. Major conflicts include the Chunying War, which resulted in the annexation of the United Republic through the Treaty of Bei Da Feng, the Dragonhawk War, and the Battle of Seilkuq, caused by the refounding of the Fifth Nation and its murder of Earth Kingdom citizens; the conflict later ended with Seilkuq becoming a safe haven. The list continues with the Senlin War, fought to restore the Province of Senlin back to Earth Kingdom authority, and the Second Senlin War, which again resulted in the annexation of the United Republic and the formation of the Protectorate of Republic City until it was annexed in full through the Rhéng River Edict of 172 AG, and finally the Siege of Ba Sing Se which saw the death of 54th Earth King Ryuco Enren. The Earth Kingdom also participated in the World War, fighting as a defender alongside the Sun Warriors, Foggy Swamp Tribe, and Water Tribe.

The Earth Kingdom also saw the rule of the 63rd, 65th, and 75th Earth Queen, Angelina Velkhana, a former member of the House of Beifong. She first ascended to the throne following the abdication of her father Earth King Kiros Beifong-Junyi. Her first reign lasted less than a week and ended with the signing of the Fire and Blood Accords, which she signed under extreme duress following manipulation and intimidation by 15th Mālvās M’kari Raa. Under the terms of the accords, Angelina abdicated in favour of her Domestic Minister Sasha DeCassian, while the House of Beifong was barred from the throne for four generations.

Angelina later returned to the throne on the condition by the Mālvās Max'li Raa that she sever her association with the House of Beifong. She resumed her reign after the 65th Earth King Liebe Lee, abdicated in her favour. In her final reign, she faced a full-scale rebellion led by the 76th (and later 80th) Earth King Xaoten Izaki, with support from Lin Gui, who would later become the 77th Earth Queen, and Queen Bo of Omashu. Angelina was eventually ousted and after her identity as a bloodbender was discovered, was executed by the House of Beifong, particularly Songwen Beifong, in 165 AG, giving her the name "Bloodwitch". In 174 AG, Earth Monarch Huang Ling announced the Cleansed Earth Edict, which placed Angelina Velkhana's name among those subject to a naming taboo, prohibiting their names throughout the kingdom.

The Earth Kingdom is known for its assistance to the Water Tribe despite its lack of ability to bend in the frozen tundra. This included its involvement in the Siege of the North Pole, which resulted in the capture and subsequent execution of Shu Mammon, famously referred to as the "Bloodbender of the South" by Huang Ling in their global broadcast. The siege also resulted in the defeat of the Amaryllis family and the suppression of the rebellion led by Rei Kai'morah.

Government

The Earth Kingdom is governed by the Council of Three, a council composed of three ministers responsible for the kingdom's military, domestic, and spiritual affairs. The council is led by the Grand Secretariat and under the authority of the Earth Monarch. The three ministers are:

Minister Of War, responsible for the Earth Kingdom's military and leads the justice system. The current holder is Jan-Ro Yanshi.
Minister Of Prosperity, responsible for the Earth Kingdom's domestic and international affairs. The current holder is Shan Long.
Minister Of Rites, responsible for the Earth Kingdom's spiritual institutions as the Grand Sage. The current holder is Hue Tung.
