Emperor Izocoa Dainagon (b. 115 AG) was the 2nd & 4th Sun Emperor (r. 134–135 AG, 138–139 AG), the 66th Earth Monarch (r. 152-154 AG), and briefly the first independent Kyoshi Leader (r. 152 AG), known for his role in the expansion and governance of the Sun Empire following the abdication of his father, Azutoru Dainagon. He is one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures of the mid-2nd century AG, remembered for his bending prowess, acute intelligence, and unpredictable political maneuvers.
Biography
Early Life
Izocoa (born Izaka) was born in Nozawa during Azutoru’s tenure as Governor to Azutoru Dainagon and Desiriya. A year after Izocoa was born, Desiriya had fallen ill with an uncommon and infectious disease and she shortly died. Izocoa's early childhood was largely marked by relocation. Izocoa, Azutoru and his newborn sister, Izel, had moved to Caldera City in the early days of 118 AG while his father was working as Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, in the late summer of 118 AG, a coup was formed and the Dainagons were forced to fled to Agna Qel'a for a short period of time, before Azutoru set sail to La Bayan and ascended into chiefdom. Raised largely by Azutoru and a rotation of mentors, Izocoa had a strict, high-pressure upbringing, and idolized his father. He began learning firebending independently before being trained by the firebending master Gao Pan, and later the dragons themselves.
He considered himself superior to most of his siblings, with the exception of Meztli Dainagon, for whom he held a rare respect. He viewed chi-blockers and nonbenders—such as his sister Aemyra—as beneath him.
Teenage Years
As a teenager, Izocoa served as Stellar Apostle —- later known as Pontifex, conducting Sun Warrior spiritual rites and ceremonies. During this time, he bonded with the dragon Thystyra, daughter of Ranira, descended from Ran and Shaw. It was through meditation and training that Izocoa mastered blue fire, embodying the ancient principle that fire should stem from strength and harmony, not rage. He was frequently named Chief Regent during Azutoru’s diplomatic absences and began planning his vision for a more unified nation.
Serving in the Supreme Council as Azutoru Dainagon's right-hand, he aided him in the cultivation of the Sun Empire the acquisition of the Bianqui archipelago, Hortezuca and Arangoy, the isles Azu and Izo (now Wei Gong and Sha Ying respectively), the Chameleons, and Repiras (the Sun Warrior colony in Republic City).
Reign as Sun Emperor
In 134 AG, after Azutoru's abdication and the renaming of the Sun Warriors into the Sun Empire, Izocoa ascended as the second Sun Emperor. His reign was short-lived but ambitious. He implemented bureaucratic restructuring, drafted infrastructure plans for Hortezuca, Repyras (now Republic City, the surrounding islands, and the Chameleons, and sought to balance spiritual and imperial priorities. However, many of his policies were stalled or blocked by internal factions and administrative disarray.
In the late 134 AG, dissent stirred among the council. Insular Pontifex Aeleus -- a spiritual leader and longtime member of the Supreme Council shocked the court by denouncing Izocoa's rule. Once considered a close ally, Aeleus declared Izocoa too inexperienced, impulsive, and dangerously ambitious to bear the mantle of Sun Emperor. Aeleus founded the Order of the Dragons, a splinter sect of loyalists and sages who believed the throne should be guided by ancient wisdom rather than youthful conquest. They called for Izocoa’s abdication but, despite Aeleus' standing, the rebellion failed to gain widespread support. Most feared Izocoa’s wrath — or respected his growing authority and the rebellion died out.
In 135 AG, Izocoa mysteriously vanished during a diplomatic voyage to the Earth Kingdom. The Insular Pontifex Zuros claimed to have been named heir and assumed power in his absence, to be quickly challenged by his sister, Alinova Dainagon, claiming it should stay in the family.
In 137 AG, Izocoa returned under a false name, Necahual Atl with little to no memory and slowly joined the Supreme Council as Consular Apostle. He subtly called Alinova out for her false ruling until he regained his memory and contacted nation leaders, asking for their support in the usurpation of his sister. This quickly backfired on Izocoa as the message returned to Alinova and he was put on trial to be later sentenced to banishment and kill-on-sight. Izocoa would not give up and meets with Destra Beifong who supports his cause. With the backing of the Earth Kingdom and Izocoa, Alinova steps down to Magister of Hortezuca and Izocoa returns as Sun Emperor.
In 139 AG Izocoa and his son, Ixqui Dainagon attend a festival in Nunatak where he is said to be killed by a Red Lotus member, leaving his son Ixqui Dainagon in charge. However this was not true and Thystyra had saved him, carrying him to a nearby island called Nisotu Island where he underwent years of physical therapy by a group of shamans.
Coup attempt in the North
In 144 AG Izocoa returns and with the Sun Warriors being ruled by the powerful House of Raa he sets visions on the Northern Water Tribe. He comes across Water Chief Hiroko, who he murders and frames someone else. He proclaims himself the new Water Chief by virtue of his lineage to previous Water Chiefs Kamluk and Hikaru, but Karrad Silana contests the claim, and Izocoa eventually concedes, becoming Luminary instead, with Karrad as the new Water Chief.
Becoming bored of the Northern Water Tribe, and how unfitting it was seeing as he was a firebender, he moves to the Fire Nation with the majority of Clan Dainagon, working beneath his sister, Izel-Eluia and alongside his father, Azutoru Dainagon.
Reign as Earth King
Azutoru Dainagon becomes Fire Lord and in 152 AG, in hopes of making his father proud, leaves the Fire Nation for the shores of Kyoshi Island, where he begins plotting to take the Earth Throne from the newly re-coronated Angelina Velkhana. A talented general and politician, Izocoa quickly gains a following of powerful fighters and rebels against the Queen, claiming right of conquest, with Kyoshi Island as his base of operations and naming himself temporary Kyoshi Leader. A powerful dragonrider and one of the world’s best firebenders, additionally with the backing of the adept fighters of the Water Tribe, Izocoa is successful in intimidating Queen Angelina into handing over the Earth Kingdom peacefully, in a treaty known as “Dolaros Drax”, or “Dragon Accords” in Solandu.
Upon his successful usurpation, Earth King Izocoa Vadarys of House Dainagon, as he styled himself, signed treaties with the Water Tribe and Fire Nation, respectively forging or re-forging the Snowstone and Basalt Alliances, military and trade pacts and befriending nations.
The Pirate Accords were signed by Earth King Izocoa in 153 AG, officially relinquishing the Chameleon Islands to his friend Omori Hitomi, who proclaims himself Pirate King. Omori Hitomi was murdered by Angelina Velkhana and an accomplice of hers, who was captured by Earth King Izocoa and interrogated for information, but summarily executed when he refused to reveal the whereabouts of Angelina Velkhana.
In 154 AG, Izocoa formally abdicated the throne, passing it to his trusted councilor, Hatsu Duran. In his surprise abdication speech, Izocoa publicly revealed the existence of his long-hidden son, Caśaval Valcazar Dainagon. Kept secret for years, Caśaval had been born in the wake of personal tragedy, the untimely death of Izocoa’s firstborn son, Ixqui Dainagon and was hidden out of both grief and a protective instinct. Following his abdication, Izocoa and Caśaval relocated to Nisotu Island, a secluded island where the island shamans had once cared for Izocoa in his youth. Izocoa lived there in quiet exile, far from danger, raising his son. He would remain on Nisotu for the rest of his days.
Personality
Izocoa was a brilliant, prideful, and polarizing ruler, defined by his relentless ambition and desire to surpass his father. Once a spiritual prodigy in his youth, he became a calculating and often power hungry leader, unafraid to usurp even his own sister to reclaim the throne.
