The office is generally hereditary but varies, as the term zongdu also includes more specialized ranks such as Omashu Monarch, Kyoshi Leader, and more recently Councilman of Republic City, an elected office. Each zongdu is a member of the Zongduyuan, a national assembly of zongdus who meet with the Earth King in Ba Sing Se. Some notable zongduships are Gaoling, held by the Beifong family; Chunying, the Ling family; and Zeizhou, the Enren family.
