The Second United Republic, also known as the second United Republic of Nations, was a multinational state that existed from 123 AG to 136 AG. It was composed of both benders and non-benders from across the Four Nations, and was re-established by the United Fire Nation following the collapse of the first republic. It was later annexed by the Earth Kingdom after the Chunying War.
The republic was restored in 123 AG as a diverse and unified nation rather than a single-nation state, bringing together people of different elemental backgrounds under one government. It was first led by President Swilon Feng with Vice Presidents Estic Watanabe, Kento Nanami, and Kento Nanami, President Polly Adoria with Vice President Bubble Adoria, and President Yasu Kenshi, with Ginshi Yagisen serving as Vice President. Despite its diverse foundation, the republic faced internal instability and increasing external pressure.
Tensions with the Earth Kingdom escalated when the Kenshi administration, acting on rumours of an impending attack, attempted to kidnap Earth Queen Destra. The attempt failed and led directly to a declaration of war by the Earth Kingdom. Although the Sun Empire had previously been allied with the republic, it remained neutral. Vice President Ginshi also declared neutrality, creating a deep division within the leadership.
In preparation for invasion, the Kenshi administration fortified the province of Chunying, focusing on a central hill which became a key defensive stronghold. Plans to use land mines against advancing Earth Kingdom forces were discovered and neutralised before battle. Following this failure, Kenshi withdrew to Republic City and fortified the capital, allowing Earth Kingdom forces to advance through Chunying and take control of territory from the Bian River to the Rhéng.
As the Earth Kingdom approached Republic City, Kenshi appealed to foreign powers for support, but no assistance was given. The republic had become diplomatically isolated. At the same time, Vice President Ginshi distanced herself from the conflict and negotiated with the Earth Monarchs, securing an agreement that she would be appointed Zongdu of Chunying in exchange for her neutrality.
Before the fall of the capital, President Yasu Kenshi died suddenly under suspicious circumstances, widely believed to be an assassination carried out by agents aligned with the Earth Kingdom. With leadership collapsed and defences failing, the republic could no longer resist. The war concluded with the Treaty of Bei Da Feng in 136 AG. Under its terms, the entire United Republic was ceded to the Earth Kingdom, ending its existence. Ginshi Yagisen was appointed Zongdu of Chunying, placing the former republic under direct Earth Kingdom control.
The Second United Republic was dissolved into the province of Chunying, and is remembered as a diverse but fragile nation, whose internal divisions and diplomatic isolation led to its downfall and the final expansion of Earth Kingdom authority over its territory.
