Songwen Beifong

Sòngwén Xiǎomèi Beifong is the former 81st Earth Queen and Matriarch of the House of Beifong. She is the granddaughter of Toph Beifong and daughter of Earth King Xinliezhuo Beifong. Her reign is known for political consolidation, restoration of traditional Earth Kingdom authority, and centralised governance reforms during the mid-160s to early 170s AG.

Early life

Songwen was born in 140 AG in the town of Quangku in Cheng province, under the name Songwen Tian. She was raised in secrecy by her mother, Shufen Tian, alongside her sisters Xiuying and Lixue. Her father, Xinliezhuo Beifong, lived separately from the family due to his withdrawal from royal duties, leaving Shufen to raise the children outside formal court influence.

From an early age, Songwen showed strong academic ability and interest in politics, law, and statecraft. She was described as disciplined, reserved, and observant compared to her more outspoken siblings.

After the death of her mother in 162 AG, Songwen and her sisters discovered their true lineage as members of House Beifong. They relocated to Gaoling and formally reclaimed their noble identity, re-establishing the Beifong estate and its political influence.

Rise in politics

Songwen’s political career began under Earth King Xaoten Izaki, where she served as Royal Advisor and later Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se. She became a key figure in Earth Kingdom governance, involved in administration, diplomacy, and structural reform.

She supported Xaoten Izaki’s rebellion against Earth Queen Angelina Velkhana and played a role in the political transition that followed. Songwen oversaw the public execution of the deposed Earth Queen in Gaoling, an event that significantly increased her influence within the kingdom.

Reign as Earth Queen

Following Xaoten Izaki’s era, Songwen ascended as the 81st Earth Queen. Her reign focused on strengthening central authority, restoring traditional Earth Kingdom governance, and rebuilding administrative infrastructure in Ba Sing Se and Gaoling.

Her policies included economic redevelopment, agricultural expansion, and reinforcement of noble hierarchy. She maintained a strict ideological approach centred on stability, order, and continuity of tradition.

Abdication

Songwen Beifong abdicated the throne on the 3rd of Chǒuyuè, 173 AG in favour of Huang Ling, now the 82nd Earth Queen. Her abdication marked the end of her formal rule as Earth Queen. Following her resignation, she returned to Gaoling and resumed her role as Matriarch of the House of Beifong.

Personal life

Songwen is married to Zhentu Enren, Zongdu of Zeizhou. Their marriage was politically arranged to secure control and stability over Zeizhou province. They have two children, Yùxiù and Tǔxiāo.

Their relationship is formal and politically functional, with cooperation focused on governance and regional stability.

Personality and Ideology

Songwen is known for strict discipline, emotional restraint, and strong adherence to tradition. She believes that stability is the foundation of the Earth Kingdom and prioritises order over reform or rapid change.

Her ideology emphasises hierarchy, duty, and long-term structural control. She views governance as a responsibility that requires sacrifice and consistency rather than personal preference.

Songwen Beifong is regarded as one of the most influential Earth Kingdom rulers of her generation. Her reign is associated with political restoration, administrative reform, and reinforcement of Beifong authority within the kingdom.

She remains a controversial figure due to her strict policies and involvement in major political executions and purges during her rise to power.
