Huang Ling

Huang Ling (黄灵; Huáng Líng) is the 82nd Earth Monarch of the Earth Kingdom. Born in 1 Yínyuè 143 AG, they succeeded 81st Earth Queen Songwen Beifong and are known for their devotion to tradition and preservation of order. Their reign, known as the Yǒnghéng Era, introduced major law reforms, strict decrees to protect Earth Kingdom interests, and efforts to maintain unity among the four nations.

Early Life

Huang Ling was born in 143 AG in the isolated town of Bei Da Feng of the Chunying province alongside their twin sibling, Haejin Ling. Their childhood was shaped by their parents' constant absence, with their father, Heimlock Ling, often away on adventures and their mother, Xiulan Hou-Ting, placing heavy expectations on them to restore their family's reputation. After discovering Huang's talent for metalbending at a young age, Xiuan viewed it as a sign they were destined to correct the mistakes of their ancestors.

At the age of eight, Huang lost their mother, and their father began spending more time with their twins. Though, his desire for exploration did not end and often kept him away from home. In the period of absence, Huang became increasingly devoted to the mission placed upon them by their mother and focused on protecting the Earth Kingdom and preserving its traditions. As they grew older, their relationship with their father became more complicated after he returned from an expedition with a new wife, Lucinda, and the two children, Sergio and Sakari.

At the age of 18, Huang left Bei Da Feng to join their father on the world stage. Their experiences beyond the Earth Kingdom challenged many of their beliefs, forcing them to question the path they had been raised to follow. However, these experiences also helped Huang grow beyond the burdens of their childhood and develop their own vision for the future of the Earth Kingdom.

Rise to Power

After leaving Bei Da Feng, Huang Ling followed their father onto the world stage to begin studying spirituality. Their dedication to preserving Earth Kingdom tradition and spirituality eventually led them to become an Earth Sage.

Huang Ling served as Domestic Minister under multiple notable Earth Monarchs, beginning with Mai Gui and later continuing through Xaoten Izaki and Songwen Beifong's administrations.

When Songwen Beifong later abdicated the throne, she chose Huang Ling as her successor. Having previously rejected the opportunity from Earth King Xaoten Izaki to become monarch due to doubts in themself, Huang accepted the crown and became became the 82nd Earth Monarch, ending the Beifong's Hézhèng Era and beginning the Yǒnghéng Era.

Reign

Huang Ling's reign saw many reforms, especially a major rework of the Earth Kingdom law. One of their many significant changes included introducing the Cleansed Earth Edict, which was put in place to prohibit remembrance of individuals considered threats to the Earth Kingdom. They also issued a Decree of Banishment against Clan Dāinagon after their involvement in attacks against the kingdom.

Huang Ling's strong belief in protecting the traditions and cultures of the kingdom led to the Decree of Hallowed Land, an edict to protect the Sand Tribe's sacred land, including to maintain the spiritual importance of the Itgel province and its settlements. Their reign also saw major changes in foreign relations. Huang ended the Water Tribe embargo and established the Treaty of Ba Sing Se 177 AG, a military alliance between the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribe. Although the treaty was later dissolved in 178 AG, Huang did not reinstate the previous embargo in an attempt to support unity against threats facing the world.

Huang's early reign included surviving an attack with the help of the Fire Nation after being held captive by Rokah Mammon, a bloodbender, who captured them in exchange for Heimlock Ling, their father.

Legacy

Huang Ling is often remembered as "The Gilded Monarch" to reflect their belief that the Crown exists to serve the people, one of the many defining principles of their rule.
