The Water Tribe is one of the original four nations and its citizens primarily inhabit the northern and southernmost regions of the globe, near both poles. It is also a collective term for the nation of people who practice the art of waterbending. Many people of Water Tribe ethnicity also live in the United Republic and there is a small community of waterbenders that populate the Foggy Swamp in the Earth Kingdom, although they were isolated from their sister tribes for generations and others were largely unaware of their existence until they were stumbled upon by Avatar Aang, Katara, and Sokka.

The people of the Water Tribes are referred to as "Water Tribesmen". The people of the Water Tribe are generally peaceful, and strive to live in harmony with nature and the other nations of the world. Living in the harsh conditions of the poles and the swamp has made the people of the Water Tribes resilient to hardship and respectful of the world around them.

There are two primary divisions of the Water Tribe, the Northern Tribe and the Southern Tribe, both ruled by the Water Tribe Chiefs Naga Tona and Tahu Hu. The Water Tribe is less powerful than both the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation, due to its geographical location and the small size of its population and economy. The economy is dependent on the ocean, given the country's location and lack of arable land, apparent manufacturing capacity or minable resources.

Government

The Water Tribe is governed by the Council of Akhlut, an eight-member council under the authority of the Water Tribe Chiefs. The Council oversees the Water Tribe's affairs, with each member entrusted with a branch of governance.

1. Foreign Minister, responsible for the Water Tribe's foreign relations and diplomacy. The current holder is Nalukai Tasiq.
2. Admiral, responsible for the Water Tribe's military and defense. The current holder is Pride Tasiq.
3. Eclipse Sage, responsible for the Water Tribe's spiritual affairs and rites. The current holder is Aurora.
4. Archmaster, responsible for the Water Tribe's bending mastery and training. The current holder is Taluna Chom.
5. High Elder of the North, responsible for the Northern Water Tribe's domestic affairs and judicial administration. The current holder is vacant.
6. High Elder of the South, responsible for the Southern Water Tribe's domestic affairs and judicial administration. The current holder is Neo Si'Nela.
7. Royal Advisor of the North, responsible for advising the Northern Chief on matters of the state. The current holder is Kyren Luminara.
8. Royal Advisor of the South, responsible for advising the Southern Chief on matters of the state. The current holder is Neo Si'Nela.
