Zaj Hinotatsu

Zaj Hinotatsu-Kubohi (库博希·扎伊·日野达津; Kùbóxī Zhāyī Rìyědájīn), born in 146 AG and died in 176 AG, was the Hearth Minister, High General, and Grandmaster of the Fire Nation during the reign of Fire Lord Hanako Hinotatsu. He held all three positions from 167 to 173 AG.

Zaj was originally known as Kal Kubohi. He adopted the name Zaj Hinotatsu-Kubohi in 169 AG.

He died on 26th of Maoyue, 176 AG after being poisoned to death by Rokah Mammon and Khoa Si.

Background

Early Life

Zaj, then known as Kal Kubohi, was born into a family that heavily idolized the Fire Nation's military, particularly the militaristic traditions of Fire Lord Sozin's era. From a young age, he was trained in martial arts by his father, Ryoko. When his ability to firebend was discovered at the age of 8, his training intensified, teaching him both firebending and lightningbending. Kal, however, repeatedly failed to meet the standards, despite his father's expectation. Met with physical abuse and severe punishments, including depriving him of basic needs and locking him outside the family home, Kal developed an intense fear and began escaping into the forests surrounding Caldera City to avoid his training.

Kal's closest relationship during his childhood was with his older sister, Nira. Though a non-bender, Nira excelled in martial arts and was similarly subjected to their father's expectations. Nevertheless, she remained protective of Kal, and taught him kindness and helped him understand that he was more than what his father expected of him. His relationship with his sister is described a significant part of his life.

At the age of 10, he attempted to lightningbend to prove himself to his family. The technique succeeded, but he lost control of the lightning, causing it to strike an electroical socket. This destroyed the Kubohi family home and killed Nira and Kal's stepmother, Miraida. Kal survived the burns covering approximately 60% of his body. This accident left him with severe amnesia, leaving him with little memory of Nira until she only existed as an indistinct silhouette in his mind, and little understanding of his firebending.

Later Life

At 14, Kal began exploring Caldera City more freely and became involved with a group of young delinquents. He participated in roberries and other crimes before distancing himself from the group as its members were arrested. His life later changed after he attempted to robe a blacksithing business and was caught by its owner, Akzaja T'sarii. Rather than turning him over to Fire Nation authorities, Akzaja took Kal under his wing, teaching him blacksmithing and firebending. To Kal, Akzaja was a father figure, and the two remained cose even after Akazja returned to the Sun Warriors.

At 17, Kal's father died from alcoholism complications. With the Kubohi family now gone, Kal isolated himself. With the help of his cousin Isamu Hinotatsu, he moved back to Kaiyo and acquired Akzaja's former blacksmiting shop. His loneliness and grief drove Kal into alcoholism himself. Isamu eventually gave Kal an ultimatum: abandon his drinking and rebuild his life or be disowned. Kal intiially attempted to change, but relapsed and was subsequently disowned.

Determined to change now and confront the state of his life, he decided to rebuild his life and prove that he was capable of becoming a better person. He resolved to leave his past, and rejoin society to protect the people he cared about, and experience the life he had been denied during his childhood.

Rise of the Hinotatsu Family

During the Fire Nation rebellion of 165 to 166 AG, Kal suppoorted the Hinotatsu family in overthrowing the ruling Valletta family. The rebellion was based on the Hinotatsu family's belief that the Vallettas had neglected the Fire Nation and fail to provide proper leadership. Though, facing opposition from powerful families, including members of the Raa and Dainagon families, the Hinotatsu rebellion succeeded.

Isamu Hinotatsu became the first Fire Lord of the Hinotatsu family, followed by Hanako Hinotatsu. Under their reigns, Zaj became significantly involved in rebuilding the Fire Nation, later holding three ministerial roles; High General and Grandmaster alongside his position as Hearth Minister.

Firebending & Military

Kal eventually rose to become of the Fire Nation's most powerful military soldier.

His firebending eventually developed into blue fire, which he mastered after years of training. A formidable combatant, he shaped his career around his encounters with the bloodbender Shu Mammon.

Zaj was among those subjected to torture by Shu, leaving him with severe psychological and physical trauma. In his later confrontation with Shu, Zaj was again subjected to bloodbending. While struggling to escape, he manifested combustionbending for the first time, allowing him to escape Shu.

Northern Siege

Kal participated in the Siege of the North Pole, the final battle against Shu Mammon and the Amaryllis family at the Northern Water Tribe Palace alongside Xaoten Izaki, alongside other allied forces.

Kal set portions of the palace ablaze in order to force members of the family outside to allow allied forces engage them directly. Following Shu Mammmon's capture, Kal conducted his execution and delivered the final strike to Shu's neck.

Around this time, in 169 AG, Kal Kubohi adopted the name Zaj Hinotatsu-Kubohi, associating himself with the Hinotatsu family however keeping his Kubohi lineage.

Cleansing of the Atu

Kal later participated in the campaign against the Atu infestation in the Foggy Swamp Tribe. He worked alongside several powerful firebenders and their bonded dragons to prevent the infestation spreading beyond their territory. Zaj's immense firebending allowed him to destroy the Atu infestation, using his blue flames and other advanced techniques.

Among others involved in this campaign were Karuzai Tai-Yang, Hanako Hinotatsu, and Sylara Vyralys, alongside their dragons Anaxida, Rexathyraxis, and Noxus. Although the threat was not permanently eliminated, this successfully drove the Atu infestation from the Swamp.

Death

Zaj died on the 26th of Maoyue, 176 AG, after being poisoned by Rokah Mammon and Khoa Si, bringing an end to the life of one of the Fire Nation's most prominent military soldiers of the era.
