Karuzai Tai-Yang

Karuzai Tai-Yang (泰阳·卡鲁宰; Tàiyáng Kǎlǔzǎi), born in 145 AG, is the Evaltisu of the Sun Warriors, a title meaning Stellar Apostle. He is a member of the Six Rays of the Sun Council, the governing council of the Sun Warriors beneath the ruler of the civilisation, Sun Chief (or Chieftess).

Early Life

Karuzai Tai-Yang was born to two firebenders during the Fire Nation War. His mother, Saui Yang, fled to the Fire Nation after learning how the rest of the world had come to view her people. She eventually travelled to the provinces of the Sun Warriors, where she met Karuzai's father, Mak'sal Yai. The two fell in love and secretly had a child, Karuzai. Knowing the reigning Mālvās would not permit a former Fire Nation citizen to enter La Bayan, the couple chose to move as far as from the war and its bloodshed as possible. Settled on Arangoy, the Island of the Rising Sun, which at the time was largely deserted due to its distance from the civilisation, the island's farms and animal pens nevertheless provided enough for the family to live comfortably.

Karuzai's childhood was consequently isolated from the rest of the world. His family's only connection to the outside world was an old radio his mother had brought with her from Caldera City. Through it, he heard reports of war, and fear beyond the calm ocean separating Arangoy from the world.

Like both of his parents, Karuzai was born a firebender. He also possessed an innate ability to bend lightning, though he discovered this talent accidentally when his mother first attempted to teach him the technique. His first attempt struck his own left eye, permanently damaging his vision. Eventually, he learned to redirect lightning, though he found firebending far more natural. His father, a Sun Warrior, taught him the history and philosophy of firebending. He listened with fascination to stories of the ancient dragons, particularly the knowledge passed down from Ran and Shaw, the two surviving dragon masters after Fire Lord Sozin's hunt against the dragons.

Eventually, both his parents passed away, leaving Karuzai alone on Arangoy. With little else remaining for him there, he left for a small boat in which he had first arrived on the island as an infant. Upon reaching La Bayan, Karuzai discovred the world was no longer terrible as the one he had heard described through his mother's radio. Though, he found many of the tradition he learned had diminished considerably. Karuzai realised that he had become one of the few people who still remembered many of the traditions his father had taught him. He therefore decided that his time as a student had come to an end. It was now his responsibility to become a teacher.

Spiritual Journey

Karuzai joined the spiritual branch as an Ense, hoping to help restore the traditions he believed had been lost. Instead, he was met with another disappointment. The branch had become increasingly detached from its original teachings. Most troubling to him was the treatment of the dragons. Rather than being revered as ancient masters of firebending and spiritual knowledge, dragons had come to be regarded as dangerous beasts that could be directed against others by their bonded riders.

Disturbed by the silence of the branch, including that of the Evaltisu responsible for the preservation of dragons, his opportunity to change this came when Sun Chieftess Max'li Raa tasked him to conduct an audit of Hortecuza and Arangoy. In his investigations, he encountered the island of Arangoy to be far quieter than it was described in the stories of his father.

What Karuzai did not expect was for the Mālvās to appoint him as the new Evaltisu, now giving him the opportunity to rejuvenate the spiritual traditions and restore the Sun Warriors' understanding of fire, the dragons, and the teachings of their ancestors. He accepted the responsibility and dedicated himsef to teaching his people the traditions that he had spent his life preserving since 165 AG.

Proficiencies and bending style

Firebending

Karuzai possesses spiritual mastery of firebending, which he regards as both a martial discipline and spiritual practice. His style is of flowing and graceful movements, reminiscent enough of waterbending than aggressive techniques commonly associated with firebending.

His preferred technique is Fire Augmentation to use fire to enhance his physical movements and abilities. Karuzai is also a green firebender, and an energy reader.

Dragon

Karuzai Tai-Yang is bonded to the dragon Anaxida. His relationship with fire was severely tested when he developed a spiritual illness caused by a rift within his mind. His obsession with producing a colourful flame gradually consumed his ability to firebend. As his illness worsened, so did his movements. Eventually, he was unable to travel from Arangoy, where he sat upon one of the island's platforms surrounded by a ring of fire. Believing that his condition would eventually claim his life, Karuzai remained there, waiting to die.

His fire, however, ultimately what attracted the attention of Anaxida, a dragon. Seeing the enormous ring of flame, the dragon approached Karuzai. Anaxaida taught him that his pursuit of fire had caused him to misunderstand its true nature. Fire could not be reduced to colour or spectacle. Through his final acceptance of this lesson, he regained his understanding of fire and formed his bond with Anxida.

Green Fire

Following his bonding with Anaxida, Kurzai devoted himself almost entirely to his duties and responsibilities as Evaltisu. His research intensified after seeing the appearance of Red Fire during Licara's promotion ritual, one of his ibials. Fascinated by the phenomenon, Karuzai became determined to reproduce it himself. After eventually attaining Green Fire, his pursuit of such flames became increasingly personal. He developed jealousy towards his dragon, particularly because of her ability to enlighten others in ways he struggled to achieve himself.

Energy Reading

Following his engagement to Lixue Beifong, Karuzai began considering the responsibilities he would have as a future husband and father. He became particularly interested in learning techniques that could help protect his future children, which led him to study energy reading and fire healing under Ilah Hu, a descendant of the Bhanti Shamans.

Through this, he learned to perceive and interpret the flow of energy within living beings. This expanded his understanding of fire beyond its physical properties and allowed him to approach it from a more spiritual perspective. Together, his study of fire healing and energy life developed his belief that fire could preserve and restore life rather than merely destroy.

Personality

Karuzai is described to be loyal, humble, and kind hearted. He places honour above many other personal qualities and has little patience for arrogance, selfishness, or those unwilling to learn from others. His patience and ability to mediate conflicts make him a capable companion during foreign travel. Among the Sun Warriors, he is known as a thoughtful person who offers advice to those willing hear it.

Karuzai is particularly well suited to teaching. He remains calm when dealing with difficult students and prefers patience and explanation over punishment. One of his most notable qualities is his ability to judge character. Karuzai plays close attention to people's words, actions, and body language to allow him discern their emotional state and intentions.
