The Third United Republic, also known as the third iteration of the United Republic of Nations, was a multinational state that existed from 152 AG to 168 AG. It was formed from territories ceded by the Sun Warriors following the Fire and Blood Accords and was ultimately dissolved after defeat in a war against the Earth Kingdom, which annexed most of its territory and reduced Republic City to a protectorate.

The republic was established in 152 AG after Mālvās Max’li Raa agreed to transfer control of the Hu Xin provinces, previously taken during the war with the Earth Kingdom, to a newly reformed United Republic. This decision followed the Fire and Blood Accords, which forced the Earth Kingdom to cede multiple territories under duress. The new republic was led by President Liebe Lee, a former Earth Kingdom official who had previously attempted to reform its governance. He chose to rebuild the republic as a diverse nation of benders and non-benders, centred in Republic City. His administration included Vice President Kirstan Sakari and Grand Justice Jaseras Dainagon.

Despite its formation, the republic’s position remained fragile. Relations with the Earth Kingdom deteriorated over time, particularly after the United Republic failed to honour a military pact by refusing to assist the Earth Kingdom in a conflict with the Water Tribe. In 167 AG, Earth Queen Mai Gui publicly denounced the republic, accusing it of diplomatic failures and illegitimacy, and declared war with the stated aim of reclaiming former Earth Kingdom territories.

In 168 AG, Earth Kingdom forces, supported by allied powers including the Fire Nation, launched a major offensive into United Republic territory. Their advance through Senlin province overwhelmed United Forces under General Vasia Silva, forcing a retreat after a decisive defeat. The Earth Kingdom’s military advantage, combined with specialised bending forces, made continued resistance untenable.

Following the collapse of its defensive positions, the Jeong administration entered private negotiations with the then-Earth Kingdom’s Council of Five. President Jeong Jeong formally surrendered on the condition that civilians and captives would be protected and allowed to remain in their homes. His surrender was accepted, and shortly after, the Edict of Republic City was issued. The edict dissolved the Third United Republic in 168 AG. Most of its territory was annexed into the Earth Kingdom, while Republic City itself was not directly annexed. Instead, it was reorganised as the Protectorate of Republic City, a semi-autonomous client state under Earth Kingdom influence, justified on the basis of its distinct identity and republican traditions.

The Third United Republic is remembered as a restored but short-lived multinational nation, whose existence was shaped by external powers and ultimately ended by military defeat and political isolation.
